William J. “Bill” Fisher, 70, of 7 Cedar Street, passed peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, October 10, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, with his loving family at his side.
A native of Greenfield, he was born on March 5, 1947 to Albert W. and Sophie T. (Kwiatkowska) Fisher. Bill was educated in Greenfield Public Schools and graduated from GHS in the Class of 1965. While in high school, he worked part-time for Dillon’s Chevrolet and later for the late Allie Newcomb.
Following his graduation, he accepted a full time position with Dillion’s as an automotive mechanic. Bill then accepted a position with the former Boston & Maine Railroad as a machinist and mechanic, retiring following 33 years of service from Guilford Transportation Industries, the successor to the B&M and now known as Pan Am Systems.
Bill enjoyed restoring cars and was a devoted Indian Motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed fresh water fishing, hunting and was a member of the NRA and the Leyden Rifle Club. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Greenfield, the Mechanics Masonic Lodge in Montague and served in the 54th Massachusetts Army National Guard, Company B out of Greenfield, MA. He will be remembered by those who knew and him for his steadfast loyalty and friendship and his “gift of gab” as he loved to “chat”. He enjoyed the company of his beloved Jack Russell terriers, “Boogie” and now “Patch”.
He is lovingly remembered by his family, none more so than his wife the former Linda A. Martin, as well as his daughter and son-in-law; Deborah and Jeffrey Gordon of Greenfield, MA and their children: Christopher and Melissa and Lucinda “Cindy” Isles, who was like a second daughter to him. Additionally, he leaves brother-in-law Earl Schacht and his wife Irene, his brother-in-law the Hon. William F. Martin and his wife Isabel Field, sister-in-law Tina and Russell Woods of FL and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Bill is also remembered by his devoted friends: Tom and Diane Caron and Edith Harris, wife of the late Bill Harris. He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Caroline, Robert and Darlene, as well as by his Aunts Helen and Jenny Kwiatkowska.
Bill’s family invites you to join them on Sunday afternoon, October 15, 2017 at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, where they will receive guests from 2:00PM until 4:00PM. A committal service following cremation, will take place on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:00AM at Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA, with services to be conducted by his brother-in-law the Hon. William F. Martin. A reception following the services will be announced. Expressions of affection in Bill’s memory are suggested in lieu of flowers, to either the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 15829, Arlington, VA 22215 or the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231.
