Virginia Garrand Obituary

Turners Falls, Massachusetts
Virginia E. (Freeman) Garrand, 94, of Turners Falls passed away on July 30 at home with family by her side. Born in Athol Massachusetts on November 19, 1923 to Louis and Sarah Freeman. Virginia attended the local schools in Athol and graduated from Athol High School.

After marrying Paul Garrand in 1942 she moved to Turners Falls and became the proud mother of 4 children. She was employed at Millers Falls Tool Company and in subsequent years, she worked in the microforms department at the University of Massachusetts Library.

Virginia enjoyed playing cards, bowling and going out to eat with friends. She and her family especially loved summers spent at their camp on the Connecticut River, where many lasting memories were made. Her greatest pleasures in life revolved around her family. She took great pride and pleasure in watching her family marry, and grow with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday dinners were always times to look forward to and to enjoy with the entire family in attendance.

She was predeceased by her husband Paul Garrand, her brothers Bill Freeman, Dick Freeman, and Jim Green, as well as her sister Pat Girard. She is survived by her sister Sarah Sonn of Bernardston, and she leaves her daughters Paula Christian and husband Lee of Belchertown, and Nancy Wonsey and husband Lenny of Hadley; her sons Bill Garrand and wife Donna of Southampton and Tim Garrand and wife Elizabeth Castaneda of Tuckahoe New York. She also leaves her cherished 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Per Virginia’s request, visiting hours will be omitted. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA at 10:00AM, with Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor as the celebrant. Committal services and inurnment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA. Immediately following the committal rites, a reception will take place in the Fr. Casey Parish Hall of Our Lady of Peace Church. Flowers are respectfully asked to be omitted, with donations in Virginia’s memory preferred to either the Carnegie Public Library, 201 Avenue A, Turners Falls, MA 01376 or to Warm the Children, c/o The Recorder, P.O. Box 1367, Greenfield, MA 01301.
