Susan Platt Obituary

Greenfield, Massachusetts
Susan Roberta Gold Platt passed away at her home in Greenfield on February 7, 2017. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, she graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1969, and spent a decade teaching developmentally disabled children and adults in Toronto and the UK.  She also traveled extensively in Europe, and lived on a kibbutz in Israel for a year.
While on vacation in the Caribbean in 1979, she met an American medical student. Their relationship blossomed. Soon, they were married and started a life together. In 1991, Susan moved with her young family to Greenfield, where she made a warm, beautiful home, raised three children, and became a beloved member of the local community.  She taught at the Center for New Americans and Grinspoon Academy, served on the Greenfield Library board, and was an active member of Temple Israel.
Throughout her life, Susan’s character, compassion, and humor drew others to turn to her for strength and solace. She was a devoted aunt, a loyal sister and cousin, and a true and dependable friend to many. Susan was a passionate gardener, a voracious reader, and an accomplished quilter.
She is survived by her husband, Marc, children, Joshua, Alexander, and Emily, daughter-in-law Sharon and grandson, Arlo.  Funeral services in celebration of Susan’s life and many gifts, will be observed on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 2:00PM from Temple Israel, 27 Pierce Street, Greenfield, MA.  Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Greenfield Hebrew Cemetery, Greenfield, MA.  Shiva will be observed at Susan’s home, 27 George Street, Greenfield, MA on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6:00PM until 9:00PM.
Those who would like to commemorate Susan through donation are encouraged to do so by donating to the Cancer Connection in Northampton and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
