Robert Therien Obituary

Greenfield, Massachusetts
Robert Joseph “Bob” Therien, 87, of 22 Spruce Street died Friday, March 6, 2015 at Charlene Manor Extended Care, 130 Colrain Road, following a period of declining health, surrounded by his two devoted sons.
A native of Greenfield, MA, he was born November 8, 1927 to Pliney “Pete” Therien and Margaret (Hescock) Therien.  Bob attended Greenfield Public Schools and was a graduate of GHS in the Class of 1945.
He worked for 32 years for the former Greenfield Tap & Die Corporation, a subsidiary of TRW and retired in 1986.  He then joined Stop & Shop Corporation and worked as a retail bagger at the Greenfield Store. He made many friends among the customers and his coworkers, retiring for a second time in 1995 after nine years.  Bob was also employed by Wilson’s Department Store as a part-time night security guard for several years.
Bob served the Town of Greenfield as a call-firefighter for the Greenfield Fire Department and retired from active service as a Lt. in 1983.  He was active on the department’s muster team for many years.  He was a devout communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield and a life member of the Lt. John J. Galvin Council #133 of the Knights of Columbus, where he faithfully served in many offices. A devoted fan of New England Sports, he could often be found watching his beloved Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and Patriots.  This past season, he was over joyed with the recent Patriots super bowl triumph over the Seattle Seahawks.
Additionally, he could be found attending numerous athletic events at Deerfield Academy, where he would encourage the student athletes in their endeavors in the absence of their parents and family.  As a result, he was affectionately known to many of the student athletes as “Pops”. Bob could also be found attending numerous bingo nights throughout Franklin County.
He married the love of his life, the former Sylvia M. Togneri, on August 1, 1953, in Holy Trinity Church, Greenfield, MA.  They celebrated 52 years of blissful marriage until her death in November of 2005.  He is lovingly remembered by his two sons:  Norman R. and Gary J. Therien of Greenfield, MA, as well as by several cousins.  He was predeceased by his parents, in addition to his loving wife of 52 years, his brother, Donald S. Therien and as well by his “coffee clutch” friends, the late John Zon and Norman Matthews.
Bob’s sons would like to express their grateful appreciation to the management and staff of the Charlene Manor Extended Care nursing facility for their many acts of kindness provided to their father.
Funeral services in celebration of Bob’s life, will be observed on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 with dismissal prayers to be offered at 9:15AM from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield MA, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial to follow in Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield, MA at 10:00AM, with Rev. Campoli, Pastor, of Blessed Sacrament Church to be the celebrant.  Rites of committal and burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA.  Members of the Greenfield Fire Department will provide an honor guard in recognition of his many years of service to the department.  A reception will follow at the Terrazza Restaurant at the Greenfield Country Club.
