Hadley, MassachusettsRobert Earl Jackman, Sr., 82, passed peacefully on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the Elaine Center at Hadley Genesis Healthcare, 20 N. Maple Street, Hadley, MA, following a period of declining health, with his wife Roberta “Bobbie” at his side. A native of Greenfield, MA, he was born on August 16, 1934 to Dorothy J. (Ford) and Frederick L. Jackman. He was educated in Greenfield Public Schools and was a graduate of the former Greenfield Vocational School. He worked for the former Franklin County Lumber Co., later co-owner of the former Gift & Jackman Painting Co., as well as for the Town of Colrain-Department of Public Works and lastly for Rugg Lumber Co., as a yard attendant prior to his retirement.He married the love of his life, the former Roberta A. Greene, who was his high school sweetheart on October 30, 1954 in Holy Trinity Church, Greenfield, MA. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this past fall. Robert enjoyed wood working and cabinet making and was a “jack of all trades”. He shared a love of square dancing with his wife Roberta and they were members of the Trail Town Twirlers for many years. Additionally, they enjoyed traveling with their dear friends Robert and Carol Gillis. He will be remembered by those closest to him, for his endearing love and devotion to family and friends and his penchant for helping others. He was truly a supportive and caring man. He leaves to remember him with great affection, his adoring wife Roberta and their children: Bonnie J. Butler and her husband Louis, of Belchertown, MA; Barbara J. Vaughan of Greenfield, MA; Robert E. “Bob” Jr., of Montgomery, MA; Brian P. and his wife Karen, of Bourne, MA; William A. “Bill” of Bernardston, MA and Barry J. and his wife Elice, of Alstead, NH. Additionally, he leaves his sister Patricia Schermeyer of Palm Bay, FL, as well 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 nephews, 1 niece and several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a daughter Tina, a son Bruce and by his sister Mabel Greer. He is remembered by his dear friends Dale Vaughan and Robert Gillis. A life celebration gathering will be observed on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:00AM from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA, with members of his family to offer loving remembrances in his memory. The Jackman family will receive guests prior from 10:00AM until the time of the service. In keeping with Robert’s request for simplicity, he will be cremated and a private inurnment will take place in the spring at the convenience of his family in the Brick Cemetery, Colrain, MA. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable donation in his memory, are requested in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, 264 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
