Weston, MassachusettsPhyllis Marie Alvord, 93, wife of Rollin, and mother of Cheryl, David and Richard, peacefully joined the Lord along with friends and family who preceded her. We rejoice in all the wonderful ways that she related to each generation of which she was a part. She always found ways to use her skills to express her love. Whether it was sewing or knitting, laughing or cooking, showing up for birthdays and special events, every family member knew her love in these kindnesses. Her friendships spanned bridge tables, bowling alleys and golf courses often winning first place and sometimes the booby prize. She has been described as a “lovely woman”. Phyllis was raised to enjoy life. Born at home in Chicopee MA, the middle child of three, she grew up on Alvord Avenue, attended Alvord Elementary School, graduated as a Pro Merito Honor Society scholar at Chicopee High School in 1944. She married First Lieutenant Rollin D. Alvord of South Hadley Falls in 1946 upon his return from active duty in the European Theater war efforts. Each of her children, because of age gaps, enjoyed special attention in their youngest years. Because she was blessed with a long life, each child and grandchild have memories of gifts, laughs, reading books and appreciation of her as wonderful and special. We expect to be telling stories of gifts and laughs for many years. She leaves daughter Cheryl M. Alvord Ryan, her husband Dennis, of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Cheryl’s children Heather Fitzpatrick and her husband Kirk, Peter Kuhl and his wife Molly, Gretchen Johnson and her husband Andrew as well as great grandchildren, Emily, Aidan, Katie, Jasmine, Sebastian, Marleigh & Cora. She also leaves son David and his wife Cheryl of Sun City Arizona and grandchildren Catherine S. Hooper, Christy Alvord, and greatgrandchildren Dylan Alvord, Madison Hooper, Mackenzie Regec. She is also survived by her son, Richard, his wife Liza Stearns, and granddaughter Lilian of Roslindale, MA. She lived most of her life in Pittsfield MA. as the wife of an electrical engineer employed at GE. Phyllis was very active at Zion’s Lutheran Church in Pittsfield, participating in worship, woman’s circles of service and Altar Guild. She was the first woman elected to the Church Council in its first 100 years. She had the joy of friends from that community for more than 50 years. Through Zions she learned of Camp Calumet Lutheran at which all her children served on the staff. She knew the value of this experience and so we request that any memorials be given to either Zions Endowment Fund or Calumet’s Special Gift in her memory.Burial will be in the Alvord Family Plot in the East Shelburne Cemetery in Shelburne Falls, MA at a future date.
