Philip Roth Obituary

Longmeadow, Massachusetts
Philip G. Roth, 90, of 255 Green Hill Road, died peacefully on July 28, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA, following a period of declining health.
A native of Montague, MA, he was born on June 24, 1927 to George A. and Madeline F. (Hahn) Roth and was educated in Montague Public Schools.  Philip was a graduate of Turners Falls High School in the Class of 1945.  He enlisted in the USMC three days after his eighteenth birthday, on June 27, 1945 and served honorably until his discharge on August 30, 1946 with the rank of PFC.
Upon his return to civilian life, he entered the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he obtained his BA in Business Administration.  He accepted a position with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, MA as a financial consultant, retiring in 1990, following 40 years of continuous service.
He married the former Ruth Beverly Phillips in Greenfield, MA on July 5, 1952 and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.  In addition to his loving and devoted wife, he leaves his adoring children: James P. Roth and his wife Sonya, of Claremont, NH; John P. Roth and his wife Christine, of Greenfield, MA and Janet P. Roth of Randolph, VT.  Philip is remembered with affection by his siblings: Howard Roth and his wife Elaine, of Stormville, NY and Joyce Nadeau and her husband James, of Centerville, MA.  Additionally, he leaves 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews to remember him with great affection.
In keeping with Philip’s interest in simplicity, private services will be observed at the convenience of his family following cremation, with military honors to be conducted to honor his service to our country. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in his memory are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Holyoke Soldier’s Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 to honor those, who like Philip, selflessly served our country.
