Gill, MassachusettsMichael P. Smith, 61, of Barney Hale Road, died Sunday, July 23, 2017 at home. He was born on October 9, 1955 in Greenfield, MA, to Dorothy Pauline (Renaud) Smith and Albert Freeman Smith. He attended Montague Public Schools and was a graduate of Turners Falls High School in the Class of 1973, where he served on the Student Council, was elected to the National Honor Society and played basketball. Mike was a self-employed tradesman, who was a “jack of all trades”. He was a devoted New England sports fan, following the Celtics, Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed golfing at the Crumpin-Fox Club, watching the PGA on television and was for several years, a greens keeper at the Oak Ridge Golf Course in Gill, MA. Mike enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, working in his garden and tending to his orchids. He was a “Volvo” enthusiast and had a passionate interest in the history of the Town of Gill. Mike was an accomplished musician and vocalist, playing both the acoustic and electric guitar in his band called the “Joint Effort”. He married the former Kim Marie Kellyhouse in August of 1974. Sadly, she predeceased him on June 24, 1978. He leaves his loving children: Angelique R. Adams and her husband Chris, of Keller, TX; Jereck M. Smith and his wife Kelly, of Turners Falls, MA; Myryah K. Daehn of Orange, MA and Nathan Barber-Smith of Bernardston, MA. Additionally, he leaves 7 adoring grandchildren. Mike is also remembered with great affection by his siblings: Linda M. Smith of Kingman, AZ; Rebecca S. Boutwell and her husband Scott, of Rowe, MA; Albert R. Smith and his wife Cary, of Mint Hill, NC; Brian R. Smith and his wife Tamme, of Gill, MA; James E. Smith and his wife Didith, of North Pole, Alaska; Mark J. Smith and his wife Diane, of Spofford, NH and David H. Smith and his wife Donna, of Timonium, MD. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Margaret Kellyhouse of Turners Falls, MA; Aunts: Alice Renaud, of Greenfield, MA; Henrietta Iken and her husband Ed, of Northfield, MA; Barbara Beneroski of Butler, PA and his Uncle Basil Smith of American Canyon, CA, as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy, on June 21, 1992 and most recently by his father, Albert, on May 11, 2017.In keeping with Mike’s request for simplicity, private graveside committal rites will be observed at the convenience of his family with inurnment to take place in the Beaver Meadow Cemetery, Leyden, MA, where he will be reunited with his beloved wife Kim. Jack Cooper, celebrant, will officiate. Visiting hours will be omitted. A celebration of life gathering will take place at the Thomas Memorial Golf and Country Club, 29 Country Club Lane, Turners Falls, MA on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 1:00PM until 6:00PM. All are invited to join Mike’s family in this time of remembrance and are encouraged to dress casually for this occasion. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in Mike’s memory are requested, in lieu of flowers, to the Gill Historical Commission, 325 Main Road, Gill, MA 01354.
