Greenfield, MassachusettsMary Elizabeth (Hoyt) Saunders, 88, of the Millhouse Apartments, 75B Wells Street, died peacefully at home in the loving care of family on Sunday, November 26, 2017 following a period of declining health.She was born in Brattleboro, VT on August 28, 1929 to Arthur and Ruth (Day) Hoyt. Mary was educated in Brattleboro and Bernardston Public Schools and was a graduate of the Class of 1947 from the former Powers Institute in Bernardston, MA. Mary worked for the former Northfield Hotel as a waitress for several years. It was there that she met her future husband, Clowes Saunders who was employed at the hotel. It was love at first sight and they began a courtship which culminated in their marriage in December of 1948. They celebrated nearly 59 years together, prior to his passing in November of 2007.Mary also worked for the former Woolworth’s 5 & 10 on Main Street in Greenfield at the luncheon counter for several years. Additionally, she was a dietary aid for the former Franklin Nursing Home. Mary enjoyed in her leisure time reading, word search and cross word puzzles, shopping, traveling to Maine, (in particular to Sebago Lake) watching TV games shows and was a fan of “Wheel of Fortune”. She is lovingly remembered by her three children: Mike Saunders (Paula) of Vernon, VT, Pamela J. Peramba (Ed) of Greenfield, MA and Luann M. Smith (Frank) of Milford, NH. Additionally, she leaves her brother Harry Hoyt and his wife Shirley of Brattleboro, VT and 2 grandchildren: Kim Mailloux and her husband, Raymond and Elizabeth Zantouliads, as well as 4 great grandchildren: Mitchel Mailloux, Dylan Mailloux, Isabelle Zantouliads, Dimitri Zantouliads and one great great-grandchild Lola Zantouliads, as well as several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband Clowes, her sister Frances Baker and by her parents Arthur and Ruth.In keeping with Mary’s request for simplicity and privacy, services will take place at the convenience of the family, following cremation with inurnment to take place in the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, MA. Jack Cooper, celebrant, will officiate. Visiting hours are omitted.
