Greenfield, MassachusettsMarie Louise “Kitty” (Bessette) Atkins, 94, formerly of 28 H Street, died peacefully on Monday evening, August 6, 2018 at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility, 130 Colrain Road, Greenfield, MA, following a period of declining health. A native of Montague, she was born on June 12, 1924 a daughter to Armedase “Peter” Bessette and Eva (Desautels) Bessette and attended the former St. Anne’s Parochial School in Turners Falls. Kitty was employed for several years as a nurse’s aide at the former Farren Memorial Hospital, as well as a private duty care attendant. Later, she worked as a waitress at the Shady Glen for 16 years. A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls, MA, where she was a member of the Women’s Group for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo, card playing, music and reading. In her leisure time, she knitted many lap blankets for various organizations throughout the Pioneer Valley. She married James A. Atkins on September 22, 1947 and they celebrated 41 years of marriage prior to his passing in March of 1989. Sadly, she and her husband were never blessed with children, however, she is lovingly remembered by several first and second cousins, as well as by their children and grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Marguerite Desautels. Funeral services will be observed on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA at 10:00AM. Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor, will be the celebrant. Those wishing to attend, are invited to convene directly at the church prior to the time of the services. Rites of committal and interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA. Visiting hours are omitted. Expressions of affection in Kitty’s memory are preferred in lieu of flowers to either, Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA 01376, or to the Charlene Manor Extended Care Nursing Facility, in c/o Resident’s Activity Fund, 130 Colrain Road, Greenfield, MA 01301.
