Manuel T. Furtado, Jr.
Manuel T. “Beanie” Furtado, Jr., 68, of 1392 VT Route 8A, passed peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2104 at home following a period declining health, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Montague, MA, he was born on June 18, 1945 to Manuel T. Furtado, Sr., and Josephine M. (Dodge) Furtado.
He was educated in Montague Public Schools. He enlisted in the USA and served honorably as a member of the 1st Engineers Battalion at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Manuel was employed by the Railroad, as a certified welder in the Bridge and Building Department retiring in 1998 with 27 years of service.
An outdoorsman, “Beanie” was an avid bow hunter who hunted the elusive white tailed deer and wild turkey. He frequently took trips to Colorado and Ohio to hunt with family and friends. He was a member and past president of the Green River Bowmen’s Club. He enjoyed teaching hunting skills to others, in particular to children. He was described as a “jack of all trades” who could repair anything. He loved to “tinker” or “putter” in his garage in his spare time. He was a former Auxiliary Police Officer for the Town of Montague, MA and a former Boy Scout leader of the Lake Pleasant Troop. He was a member of the American Legion Post #29, Readsboro, VT. Beanie was a devoted family man; he will be remembered for his love of his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He leaves his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, the former Sharon A. Murray, who he married on January 18, 1965 in Southampton, MA and their two children: Manuel T. “Tom” Furtado, III and his wife Audrey and Daughter: Tina L. Thurber and her husband James. Grandchildren Christian Yobst, Jaclyn Crowell and her husband Danny, Tabby Greenough, Katie McDonald, Nate Felton, Kyle Thurber and Trisha Woods., as well as his great grandchildren: Marley, Harper, Owen Crowell and Peter and Phinegan Yobst.
Additionally, he leaves his loving Uncle and Aunt Charles and Mary Dodge, and his Aunt Franny Lapinski. He also leaves his loving siblings: Myron Furtado, Earl Furtado, Mark Furtado, Marion Lindscott, Frances Beck and her husband Bob, Doreen Torres, and Helen Furtado and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph “Buddy” Furtado.
Services in celebration of Beanie’s life will be observed on Friday, June 13, 2014 from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 14 Prospect Street, Turners Falls, MA at 11:00AM, with Rev. Daniel Johnson, Pastor, of the Calvary Baptist Church of Turners Falls to officiate. Inurnment committal services will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Millers Falls, MA. Military honors will be conducted, with members of the 54th Massachusetts Army National Guard in attendance. The Furtado family will receive guests on Friday morning, from 9:00AM until the time of the services at 11:00AM.
