Greenfield, MassachusettsLewis Andrew Scott (Andy), 88, of 15 Meridian Street, in c/o The Arbor’s, died Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Heywood Hospital, Gardner, MA following a period of declining health. He was the son of Lewis A. and Dorothy (Johnson) Scott and was born in Springfield, MA. Andy's grandparents, Charles and Alice Johnson, raised him and his siblings in Greenfield where they grew up.Andy deeply impacted so many lives. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1944 where he acted as Team Manager for the varsity basketball team. He was proud to have been a member of U. S. Navy, enlisting during (near) end of WWII and recalled during the Korean War. He wore many hats throughout his careers working on the railroad, post office and in the computer department at UMASS Amherst.But Andy is best remembered by his family and friends as a kind, loving and generous man who believed in helping others while quietly stepping aside to observe. His love of Greenfield was expressed in so many ways such as volunteering at Holy Trinity School and his many anonymous donations to many local charities including the new Beacon Field Playground. He was often seen on daily walks on High, Silver, Federal or Main streets. He also walked part of the Appalachian Trail. His love of sports included local teams where he cheered loved ones on and he could reel off names and numbers of major league teams as well. He enjoyed many activities including playing Duplicate Bridge for many years and gardening at his home as well as bowling, bird-watching and reading.Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (Fran) Scully, his siblings, Dorothy (Dot) Morin, and George Scott. Andy is survived by his sister, Eleanor (Ellie) Frye in Somers, CT, his dear friend, Barbara (Bunny) Adams in Tyringham, MA and Andy's best friend and cousin growing up, Johnny Tetreault and many more friends and loved ones who will never forget him.Andy’s family will receive guests at the McCarthy Funeral Home, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA on Saturday, February 27, 2016 from 10:00AM until 11:30AM. A Catholic Rite of Burial Service will be observed at 11:30AM, to be followed military honors in remembrance of Andy’s service in the USN during WWII and the Korean Conflict. A detachment of the USN will be in attendance, assisted by the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295 of South Deerfield, MA. A private inurnment will take place in the spring in the Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family would like to encourage a donation in Andy’s memory to the Greenfield Recreation Department, in c/o Christy Moore-Director, 20 Sanderson Street, Greenfield, MA 01301 or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Special thanks to doctor’s nurses, and all caring individuals at Arbors, Heywood Hospital and McCarthy Funeral Home and Michael & Amy Johnson and Jim & Jean Morin, who gave so much time and effort, simply because “It was the right thing to do.”We will truly miss you Andy, your unique self and caring ways and your Swedish Nuts recipe at Christmas. We hope you enjoy counting the stars in each and every galaxy. Oh, and by the way, please let Sydney Schwartz know that we love him. Gotcha!
