Greenfield, Massachusetts
Lawrence (Larry, Stoney) Allen Stone, a resident of the Buckley Health Care Center, died Sunday, August 13, after a long period of failing health. He was 79 years old. The son and eldest child of the late Dr. Knowlton D. and Phyllis M. Stone, Larry was born on November 13, 1937, in Worcester, MA. He was brought up in Greenfield and attended Greenfield Public Schools and The Gunnery, Washington, CT. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1956.
He spent time in many parts of the country in his adult years, including: Greenfield, Boston, Northampton, and Bellingham, WA. An avid musician, Larry was capable of playing just about any instrument he wished, including trumpet, trombone, saxophone, vibraphone and piano. He loved both jazz and classical music, while demonstrating a special talent for jazz improvisation.
A football and baseball enthusiast, Larry enjoyed both professional and college football. In his earlier years, he was particularly fond of following Yale University football, where he and his father would attend games together. He knew the names of and stats for many pro and college football players. Larry was a conversationalist extraordinaire, knowledgeable on many subjects - history, literature, music and so much more. He could discuss just about anything with anyone, and loved to do so - he was also the family historian. The amount of information in his brain was incredible!
An active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Larry regularly attended AA meetings to offer inspiration, encouragement and hope to other AA attendees throughout the Pioneer Valley and beyond.
Larry leaves his five younger sisters: Rosamond (Robin) Stone, Greenfield, MA; Billie Stone Narver, Albany, CA; Phyllis Stone, Erving, MA., and Gretchen and Trudy Stone, Chelsea, MA. He also leaves four nieces and nephews, Clint Narver, Bethesda, MD; Nicole Almaguer, Albany, CA; Raub Roy, Oakland, CA; and Rachel Roy, Greenfield, MA. He also leaves four great nieces and nephews.
The Stone sisters would like to thank the nurses and staff at Buckley Health Care Center for their patient, compassionate care of Larry for the last four years during which he was a resident. The staff willingly accepted the many books and musical instruments Larry accumulated during his stay. He also had the great pleasure of playing the grand piano or his own instruments in the main lobby or dining room; in fact, Larry was affectionately referred to as "piano man" at Buckley.
A special thanks also goes to Laurence Klein, MD, Larry's physician, who shared Larry's love of jazz and was a comfort and support to both him and the family. A private internment took place Monday, August 28th at Green River Cemetery with Channing (Joe) Bete, Jr. officiating.
Family and friends are invited to an open house/tribute to Larry on Friday, October 13, from 2:00PM until 4:30PM at Buckley Health Care Center, 95 Laurel St, Greenfield, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry's memory can be made to Buckley Health Care Center, Resident Activity Fund (in support of musical entertainment), 95 Laurel Street, Greenfield, MA 01301; or Alcoholics Anonymous, 93 Chapman St, Greenfield, MA 01301.
