John was born to John Lawrence and Elsie (Malm) McGann on April 13, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from Northeast High School and went onto West Virginia Wesleyan College before entering the Airforce in 1961, where he proudly served at Kuson AFB in South Korea during the Vietnam Era.

They lived a joyful life in Chicopee, Massachusetts until 2004 when they moved to Turners Falls to be closer to their family. John was employed by the former James River Graphics /Rexam Graphics in South Hadley, MA until his retirement in 2003.
John was an avid gardener, a skilled craftsman and bird enthusiast. He found delight in sharing his knowledge and passing on the skills he had amassed throughout his life. John had a deep love of Cape May, New Jersey and in his later years relished in the discovery of his ancestry.
John is survived by his loving wife Virginia, daughter Ericka McGann Almeida and her husband Mark, his grandson Joseph “Mac” Almeida and granddaughter Elsie Almeida all of Turners Falls. His brother Robert predeceased him in 1988.
