Greenfield, MassachusettsJanice M. (Carter) Dunbar, 79, of 72 Smith Street, died peacefully on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at home following a period of declining health, surrounded by her loving family. A native of Greenfield, MA, she was born on December 16, 1938 to Leo and Evelyn (Faille) Carter and was educated in Greenfield Public Schools, graduating from Greenfield High School in the Class of 1956.Upon her graduation from GHS, she accepted a position as secretary /bookkeeper for the Town of Greenfield School Department and worked at Greenfield High School. Later, she worked for several area grocery stores as a cashier. Janice moved to the Keene, NH area, residing there for several years where she provided home child care for numerous area families. Following the untimely death of her husband Harold E. Dunbar in 1978, she returned to Greenfield and worked for Dunkin Donuts as a cashier and the former Phoenix Home Life Insurance Co. in their commissary.Janice enjoyed many leisure time interests that included, reading, bell collecting, knitting, vegetable gardening, canning, baking and a love of animals. She is lovingly remembered by her three children: Harold J. Dunbar and his wife Virginia, of Easthampton, MA; Bruce E. Dunbar of Ringe, NH and Cindy J. Cross and her husband Robert, of Greenfield, MA. Additionally, she leaves her adoring grandchildren to remember her with affection: Theodore Dunbar, Justin Dunbar and Kristy Dunbar. Janice will be missed by her sister, Judith Putnam and her husband Howard, of Walpole, NH, as well as by her lifelong childhood friend of 71 years, Lois Kendall and her dear friend of 42 years Brit Dahl . Janice was predeceased by her father Leo in 1987, by her mother Evelyn in 1992, as well as by her siblings Patricia Tombs, Margaret “Peg” Vassar and Edward Carter.At Janice’s request for simplicity, she will be cremated. Services will be observed on Tuesday, January 9, 2017 from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA at 10:00AM, with Sister Barbara Faille, SSJ, Pastor Administrator for the parish of St. Chares Borromeo, Pittsfield, MA and assisted by Mr. Thomas Graves (cousins of the deceased). Rites of committal and inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA, where Janice will be buried with her parents. A reception will follow at the Loyal Order of Moose, School Street, Greenfield, MA, following the conclusion of the committal services. Visiting hours will be conducted on Monday, January 8, 2017 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA.Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in Janice’s memory are preferred, in lieu of flowers, to the American Cancer Society, 59 Bobala Road, Holyoke, MA 01040 or via www.cancer.org
