Greenfield, MassachusettsHenry Arthur “Hank” Dion, son of the late Louis and Amanda (Desautel) Dion, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2015, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Greenfield on July 26, 1921, educated in Greenfield, and graduated from Greenfield High School. Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and was a combat veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He also participated in action against the enemy at Vela La Vela, Bougainville, Guam and the Consolidation of Northern Solomon Islands. He was honorably discharged on November 2, 1945, with the rank of Corporal.Prior to his retirement, Henry was employed for many years by the United States Postal Service and he had also worked for 16 years at Greenfield Tap and Die. He married Ruth Eileen (Casey) Dion on June 28, 1947 and they had a wonderful life together for 67 years. Henry enjoyed the great outdoors, traveling with his wife and spending time at the camp that he designed and built in Buckland with the help of his family and friends. He also enjoyed many family reunions at his daughter’s house in Turners Falls. His hobbies included fishing, refinishing old furniture, repairing old clocks, tending to his raspberry bushes and doing various projects around his house. In his later years, “Hank” enjoyed visiting with family and friends at his daughter’s lake house in Shutesbury.In addition to his loving wife, Henry is survived by his children; Tom Dion and his wife Susan, William Dion and his fiancé Mary Behalo, and Claire Martineau and her husband Gary. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and great grandnieces and great grandnephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Rita Mann and Anna Mae Kolikoski.Funeral services will be observed on Friday, January 23, 2015, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00AM at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield, MA. Rev. Fr. Timothy J. Campoli, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, will be the celebrant. Henry’s family will receive guests in the vestibule of the church prior to the funeral Liturgy, from 10:30 until the time of the services. Rites of committal and burial will follow in the Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, MA. Full military honor will be observed, with a detachment of the USMC in attendance, assisted by the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295 of South Deerfield, MA, who will provide a firing detail. Visiting hours have been omitted.
