Greenfield, MassachusettsDonald J. Menard, 91, of 395 Adams Road and a resident of the Charlene Manor Extended Nursing Facility, 130 Colrain Road, died Monday morning, January 19, 2015 at the nursing facility, following a period of declining health.A native of Greenfield, MA, he was born on September 22, 1923 and was educated in Greenfield Public Schools, graduating in the Class of GHS in 1941. Donald furthered his education by attending George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the USA in December of 1948 and served honorably until his discharge in December of 1954, attaining the rank of Sergeant.Upon his return to civilian life, he accepted a position with the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) and retired in 1980 as a contract officer and details specialist. He was a former communicant of Holy Trinity Church, Greenfield, MA and a communicant of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Turners Falls, MA. He was pre-deceased by his brothers: Ronald (his twin) in 1986, Russell in 1997 and Frederick in 1998. Donald’s greatest joy in life, was spending time family and friends. He leaves his sisters-in-laws; Angela Menard (wife of the late Frederick Menard) of Greenfield, MA and Theresa “Grace” Menard (wife of the late Russell Menard) of South Deerfield, MA. Additionally, he leaves several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins to remember him with great affection. Donald is lovingly remembered by his time long friend, Jerry Presson and his family. In keeping with Donald’s requests, a Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed from Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 84 K Street, Turners Falls, MA, on Monday, January 26, 2015 @ 10:00AM. Rev. Fr. Charles J. DiMascola, Pastor, will be the celebrant. Guests are asked to convene directly at the church in observance of the services. Rites of committal and burial will full military honors will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA. A detachment of the 54th Massachusetts Army National Guard will provide military honors, assisted by the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295, of South Deerfield, MA to provide a firing detail. Visiting hours have been omitted. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in Donald’s memory are suggested to, the Mary Lyon Education Foundation, c/o Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 26 Ashfield Road, Shelburne Falls, MA 01370 to the attention of the “Gertrude Streeter” memorial fund.
