Greenfield, Massachusetts
Bonnie Marie (Handy) Demers, a lifetime resident of Greenfield, was called home to the Lord early Saturday morning August 13 with her husband and children by her side after a brief period of declining health.
Bonnie was born October 8, 1952 in Greenfield to Lawrence M. and Violet M. (Barrett) Handy. She attended Holy Trinity School and Greenfield High School graduating in 1970.
Bonnie was a dedicated employee of the Phoenix Corporation for 43 years, continuing her work with them even after the company closed their Greenfield location.
On August 19, 1972 Bonnie married her husband of almost 44 years, Harry N. Demers Jr. at Blessed Sacrament Parish. The two made a home together in Greenfield and together raised a son and daughter. Family was Bonnie’s greatest enjoyment in her life. She strove to provide for her family economically, emotionally, and spiritually. Bonnie understood the importance of family and the example of Christ on the cross to forgive each other even when sorrow is not forthcoming. Her greatest wish was that her family would always stay strong and together.
Bonnie greatly enjoyed trips to the beach, especially Old Orchard Beach, with her husband and family. She also enjoyed crocheting blankets, clothes, and stuffed animals which she would frequently give as gifts to friends and family. Bonnie was also known to savor a dish of ice cream, particularly coffee, which she would occasionally enjoy at home, but always on her trips to the coast.
Bonnie is survived by her husband Harry N. Demers of Greenfield, MA; her mother-in-law Shirley H. (Ovitt) Demers of Buckland, MA; her children Robert M. Demers and his wife Rebecca M. (Cressey) and their children Bernadette, Gianna, Joseph, and Catherine of Greenfield; and Katelynn M. Demers also of Greenfield; her brother Robert F. Handy of Fitzwilliam, NH; sister Donna J. She is also survived by her brother-and-sister-in-law’s Carol Handy of Wilton, NH; Steve Coutu, of Colrain, MA; Carson Demers of San Francisco, CA; and BillieShirl Coutu of Shelburne, MA; as well as several nieces and nephews.
