Greenfield, MassachusettsBetty F. (Federman) Hodas, 94, passed away in her sleep early Thursday morning on July 26, 2018 at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Her family was at her side in her final days and hours. She was a Greenfield resident for close to 70 years. She put up a valiant fight in her later years as her physical health deteriorated from battling Gillian Barre syndrome, but her mind stayed strong. She was born in Weehawken, New Jersey on May 17, 1924 to Jacob and Rose (Singer) Federman. After her mother passed away in 1936, Betty then moved in with her mother’s sister and husband, Boni and Esther (Singer) Fox. Betty earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Penn State. In 1948, Betty married Milton D. Hodas of Greenfield. They were married for 50 years, prior to his passing in 1998. Milton was a founder and partner in the Outlet Store, a men’s clothing store, on Chapman Street in Greenfield from 1947 until his retirement in 1977. The Outlet Store is still open and is a lasting legacy to what her husband Milton built. Betty is survived by her son, Richard Hodas of Salt Lake City, Utah and her daughter Susan Heuer and her husband Edward of Scarborough, Maine. Betty also leaves her grandson Mathew Heuer and his wife Amy. And as life goes on, this September, Betty was smiling at the expectation of her first great granddaughter. She also leaves her other grandson, Christopher Heuer. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, scrabble and a good bargain. Betty was the administrative assistant to the dean at Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield before retiring after 37 years. She was a member of Greenfield’s Temple Israel and the past president and treasurer of the Greenfield Chapter of Hadassah. She was also on the Board of Organized Work and on the Board of Overseers of what is now the Baystate Franklin Medical Center. She was also a volunteer Shine Medicare councilor for Franklin County Home Care, now part of Life Path of Greenfield.
