Ashfield , MA - In the early morning hours of October 9, 2024, Ardath Garfield passed away peacefully at Charlene Manor in Greenfield following a long illness. She was 85 years old.
Ardath was born in Milwaukee, WI and grew up in the small town of Sparta, WI. She moved to Massachusetts after high school and has spent the majority of her life in different communities in MA and beyond. In her later years, she lived in Ashfield, MA. Here she found a community that she loved, and that love was reciprocated, on many levels, in both good times and challenging times.
Ardath was a creative spirit and enjoyed expressing herself through various mediums. Her attention to detail, beauty and whimsy was often expressed through her art which she indulged in frequently, with passion, throughout her life. She was especially known for her autobiographical paintings/portrayals through her character, Frida Gladheart.
Ardath valued the connections she made with people throughout her years and they, in turn, valued that connection as well.
Ardath is survived by her sons, Alan Shulman of Mashpee, MA and David Shulman (Kim) of Norton, MA.
She is also survived by her 2 grandchildren, Ethan Shulman of Duluth, GA and Charlie Shulman of Norton, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that donations be made to the First Congregational Church of Ashfield, MA and/or to the Art Garden of Shelburne Falls, MA.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
