Greenfield, MassachusettsAlbert Freeman Smith, 86, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, May 11, 2017 at the Buckley Health Care Center, 95 Laurel Street, following a period of declining health.A native of Buckland, MA, he was born on April 15, 1931 to Basil P. and Francease (Bellows) Smith and was educated in local public schools and graduated from the former Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. He served honorably during the Korean Conflict in the USAF, with the 32nd Tactical Recon Squadron, from 1/5/1951 until 12/22/1954 attaining the rank ofSSgt and was the recipient of the Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.He worked for 25 years at Howmet Wire Company in Northampton and then Erving Paper Manufacturing Company, Brattleboro, VT as an industrial machine mechanic, retiring in 1993. Albert was sportsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an accomplished finish carpenter and woodworker, who was known for his furniture building. Some of his favorite pastimes were gardening and watching Westerns and old war movies on television. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church in Turners Falls, MA. Albert married the former Dorothy “Pauline” Renaud, on January 8, 1955 in the former St. Anne’s Church in Turners Falls, MA. They made their home on 7 Park Street in Turners Falls, MA, where they raised their loving family. Sadly, Dorothy predeceased Albert in June of 1992 following 37 years of marriage. Sometime later, he met Mary Roberge and they became long time companionsresiding in Bernardston, MA. Albert is lovingly remembered by his companion Mary and his children: Linda M. Smith of Kingman, AZ; Rebecca S. Boutwell and her husband Scott, of Rowe, MA; Michael P. Smith of Gill, MA; Albert R. Smith and his wife Cary, of Mint Hill, NC; Brian R. Smith and his wife Tamme, of Gill, MA; James E. Smith and his wife Didith, of North Pole, Alaska; Mark J. Smith and his wife Diane, of Spofford, NH and David H. Smith and his wife Donna, of Timonium, MD. Additionally, Albert leaves 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren to remember him with love and affection. He is also remembered by his siblings: Henrietta Iken and her husband Ed, of Northfield, MA; Barbara Beneroski of Butler, PA and Basil Smith of American Canyon, CA, as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He also leaves Mary’s children - Darcy, Jimmy and Robin. Funeral services in celebration of Albert’s life and of his patriotism, will be observed on Friday, May 19, 2017 from McCarthy Funeral Home, 14 Prospect St., Turners Falls, MA at 10:00AM with Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor, of Our Lady of Peace Church officiating. Rites of committal and burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA, with military honors provided by the USAF Elite Patriot Honor Guard from Westover ARB, Chicopee, MA, assisted by the Hale-Clapp VFW Post #3295 of South Deerfield, MA.
