Albert Kane Obituary

Greenfield, Massachusetts
Albert H. “Al” Kane, 71, of Laurel Street, passed peacefully on Friday evening, February 23, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family following a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. A native of Baltimore, MD, he was born on January 30, 1947 to Margaret (Binko) and Rennert Kane and was educated in local parochial schools, graduating from Calvert Hall Catholic High School.

Following his graduation, he worked for several years at Alex Brown & Sons, prior to relocating to Massachusetts. Here, Al was employed by Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company in Greenfield, MA, until his retirement. It was then, that he embarked on a “second career” working in the circulation department for many years at The Recorder.

As a native Baltimorean, Al was a devoted football fan of the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles. He was a long time member of the Franklin County Football League, an APBA Football league. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking annual trips to Cape Cod and to Maine, traveling to Baltimore to see extended family, as well as weekly dinner dates with friends. Al enjoyed watching movies, especially romantic comedies on the Hallmark Channel with his wife and children. He loved music and the “simpler” things in life and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, infectious laugh, and love of good food. A devout Catholic, Al was a communicant of Our Lady of Peach Church, in Turners Falls, MA, where he served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister in the parish.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Jane A. Doran whom he married in 1979 in Holy Trinity Church, Greenfield, MA, as well as their children: Patrick Kane and his wife Kimberly, of Sharon, MA; Erin and Rudy Herzig and their sons Jack and Sam, who lovingly referred to Al as “Poppy”, of Turners Falls, MA and Kelsey Kane and her fiancé Daniel O’Keefe of Mansfield, MA. Additionally, he leaves his brother Rennert Kane and his wife Mary, of Middle River, MD, as well as his brother-in-law and sister-in-law’s: Paul and Margaret Doran of Greenfield, MA and Susan Doran, wife of the late William Doran, of West Hartford, CT. Al will also be remembered by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, as well as his close friends.
Al’s family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Wayne Gavryck and his nurse Melissa, of Connecticut River Internists, along with the Oncology Unit of Baystate Franklin Medical Center, for their extraordinary care and unwavering support during his illness.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 10:00AM, at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA, with Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor as the celebrant. A reception will follow, at the Montague Lodge of Elks, B.P.O.E #2521 which is located across the street from the church. In keeping with Al’s interest in simplicity, he will be cremated and scattered at a favorite beach location on Cape Cod. Visiting hours will be observed on Friday, March 2, 2018 at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA from 5:00PM until 7:00PM. The Kane family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted. Expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution are suggested in Al’s memory to either, the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1848, Longmont, CO.,80502 or, www.npcf.us./donate or to Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
